How to convert DVD to VCD/SVCD

Convert DVD to VCD/SVCD for playing on CD-ROM

DVD shorts for Digital Versatile Disc. (Digital Video Disc at one time.) High density optical storage discs. DVD discs are used to distribute movies using MPEG-2 digital video and either Dolby Digital (AC-3) or MPEG-2 (Philips MUSICAM) digital audio.

Each DVD movie disc contains one or more region codes, denoting the areas of the world in which distribution and playback are intended. The commercial DVD player only plays DVD discs that contain its region code.

VCD stands for 'Video Compact Disc' is a compact disc which stores video and audio compressed using MPEG-1 file format technology. Basically it is a CD that contains moving pictures and sound instead of software/audio/music CDs, then you will know what a VCD looks like.

VCD exists many years and is very popular in Asia, particularly China. It can be played on almost all standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of software based decoder player. So if you just have a CD writer, VCD is the best way to keep back-ups of your movies.

SVCD stands for 'Super VideoCD'. A SVCD is very similar to a VCD; it has the capacity to hold about 35-60 minutes on 74/80 min CDs of very good quality full-motion MPEG-2 video along with up to 2 stereo audio tracks and also 4 selectable subtitles. A SVCD can be played on many standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of software based decoder / player.

The quality of a SVCD is much better than a VCD, especially much more sharpen picture than a VCD because of the higher resolution. But the quality depends how many minutes you choose to store on a CD, less minutes/CD generally means higher quality.
