Now, I'd like to take software Fx MPEG Writer as an example to show you the detailed process of converting AVI to MPG.

Step 1. Download software Fx MPEG Writer, install and run it.

Step 2. Under "Please select a source file", click the Browse to locate the file on your system.

By default the files visible in the Browse for Source window are filtered to show all supported media files. You can change the filter by selecting the format you want from the drop down list.

Step 3. You can type in the path to your target file or Browse for it.

Step 4. The auto size option will resize and resample movies to play on stand alone DVD players when the Auto Size check box is selected. Please note that the standards for America and Asia (NTSC) are different from Europe (PAL).

Step 5. Set Output Format

The free version supports only Standard MPEG-1 output. The full version will convert to Standard MPEG-1, MPEG-1 with Video CD extensions, Standard MPEG-2, MPEG-2 with Super Video CD extensions and MPEG-2 with DVD extensions. Select the output format that you want to convert to from the dropdown.

Step 6. Set Output Frame Rate, Output Height, Output Width.

Step 7. Set Temp File Location

Before attempting to convert any files be sure that you have sufficient drive space on both the drive that holds your temp folder and the target drive. By default your Windows default temp folder is selected but you can point to any other folder with the browse button.

Step 8. Click "Start Conversion"
