How to Convert DIVX, DVD, MPEG4, MPEG2 to MPEG?

Now, you meet DIVX, DVD, MPEG4, MPEG2 format files and want to see them on your VCD player, but it fails to work. What can you do?

With the rapid development of media technology and the existence of new media devices, many new formats are becoming more and more popular, such as DIVX, DVD VOB, MPEG4, MPEG2, etc. Those formats do have their advantages and do play important roles in today's information transmission.

However, if you haven't the right devices to play those formats files that mean to you, and you just have a VCD player at home, you need first to change those formats to the VCD recognizable format - that's MPEG format.

Maybe before we do this, we first ought to have a good understanding of those terminologies' definitions and the relations between them. Digital Video Express (DivX) refers to the MPEG-4 video compression standard, which boasts high quality and low bitrate. Originally developed for DVD encoding (650 mb = 80-90 min. at 640x480, standard bitrate), DivX has become the internet video format of choice for high-quality productions. While DVD, introduced in 1996, was originally known as Digital Video Disc but soon became known as Digital Versatile Disc. It uses MPEG2 compression to encode 720:480p resolution, full-motion video and Dolby Digital to encode 5.1 channels of discrete audio. Thus, we know, DIVX applies MPEG4 video compression standard while DVD does MPEG2. Now, the question is what MPEG, MPEG2, and MPEG4 are? And are there some relations?

MPEG, standing for Moving Picture Experts Group is the name given to a set of standards used for coding audiovisual information (i.e., movies, music, and video) in a digital compressed format. The major advantage of MPEG compared to other video and audio coding formats is that MPEG files are much smaller for the same quality. Current standards that exist include MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-3, and MPEG4. MPEG-1 is a standard for CD-ROM video and audio. MPEG-2 is a standard for full-screen, broadcast quality video. MPEG-4 is a standard for video telephony. Most of the time, MPEG refers to MPEG1 if there is no special instruction.

From the info above, we know that the conversion between DIVX / DVD to MPEG is in fact the conversion between MPEG4 / MPEG2 to MPEG. But the premise is that you need a DVD ripper to rip DVD to video format, then use the converter below to convert it to MPEG.
