MPEG-1 is an audio and video compression format developed by MPEG group back in 1993. MPEG-1's compression method is based on re-using the existing framematerial and using psychological and physical limitations of human senses. MPEG-1 video compression method tries to use previous frame's information in order to reduce the amount of information the current frame requires. Also, the audio encoding uses something that's called psychoacoustics -- basically compression removes the high and low frequencies a normal human ear cannot hear.

MPEG-2 (1994) is the designation for a group of audio and video coding standards agreed upon by MPEG, and published as the ISO/IEC 13818 international standard. MPEG-2 is typically used to encode audio and video for broadcast signals, including direct broadcast satellite and Cable TV. MPEG-2, with some modifications, is also the coding format used by standard commercial DVD movies.

MPEG-2 is not a successor for MPEG-1, but an addition instead -- both of these formats have their own purposes in life; MPEG-1 is meant for medium-bandwidth usage and MPEG-2 is meant for high-bandwidth/broadband usage.

Step 1. Download Xilisoft DVD Ripper 2.0 and install it.

Step 2. Run Xilisoft DVD Ripper and click the button "vob" to select the VOB file which you would like to convert.

Step 3. In "input" group box, you can do some options as you like:

• Index - Select the desired program index (PGC). Most movies are stored in index 0.
• Audio - Select the Audio track to extract. Note: Only LPCM, MPEG Audio Layer 1/2, and AC3 are supported.
• Angle - Select the desired camera angle. Most movies are stored in angle 1.
• Subtitle - Select the desired subtitle from the dropdown list box.

Step 4. In output section fields, select the output format "Video CD (MPEG1)" or "Super Video CD (MPEG2)" from the dropdown list box. Click the "Browse" button to select the output folder. The encoder will output volumes as output_filename.mpg, output_filename_02.mpg, output_filename_03.mpg....

Step 5. After the above steps, click the button "Start Ripping" to start.
