Convert WMV to VOB file for playback on your DVD player

WMV stands for Windows Media Video -- developed and controlled by Microsoft.

WMV is a generic name of Microsoft's video encoding solutions and doesn't necessarily define the technology what it uses -- since version 7 (WMV7) Microsoft has used its own flavour of MPEG-4 video encoding technology (not very surprising, it's not compatible with other MPEG-4 technologies..). DivX video format is originally based on hacked WMV codec.

The latest versions of WMV (now, summer 2005, the latest one is called WMV10) don't have much in common with MPEG-4 anymore, but use Microsoft's own video encoding technologies instead.

If you edit movies using Windows Movie Maker or simply saved a bunch of video in WMV format, there's no direct conduit to getting videos to your DVD player. In this instance you may need the software of converting WMV to VOB. VOB is short for Video Object. VOB is the extension of the files contained in DVD-Video media. All DVD movies are stored in VOB files on DVDs. VOB file contains video, audio, subtitle and menu in stream form.

If you want to burn the VOB files to a standard DVD disc, you need to have all the other standard DVD files as well, including IFO and BUP files. The IFO files contain the content's attributes and options (aspect ratio, subtitles, languages, etc.), and BUP files are backups for IFO files.
